it has begun...

when steve and i first decided we were ready to have a baby (while he was teaching at a local middle school and i was about to begin my internship at a local elementary school), steve mentioned that he wanted to homeschool our future children.  i was pretty confused (we were, after all, both educated in public schools and involved in public education) and figured it he was just having a moment of crazy and would soon change his mind.

fast forward exactly six years... today began our fourth week of kindergarten with gabe at home. and after a whole summer of planning and three full weeks of school, i am happy to say that once again God has shown his plans to be bigger and more fulfilling than mine.

First day of at-home preschool and kindergarten! How can they be getting so old?! it is a joy
to be home with my boys and to teach gabe myself. that's not to say that we don't have tough days (boy do we!), but for my own sanctification and the good of my boys, i really believe we have made the best choice. here, gabe is free to be himself; he is able to jump around while reciting memory work, chew gum while working on handwriting, and take breaks from schoolwork to sword-fight with his brothers. there's a lot less 'sit down and be quiet' here and for our home, so full of life and energy and boy-sized busyness, it is just right.

on tuesdays, we are involved in a classical education co-op which allows gabe to spend time in a classroom with friends and gets us all out.  it also provides some basic curriculum for me to take off some of the pressure.  admittedly, i was not so into classical education at first, but the more i learn about it, the more i realize that i kind of love it (and an added bonus is that i have come to realize how little i really know, and can now look forward to learning alongside gabe!)
